Ideal for general topics, but don't think it will take over the role of your GP.

4 out of 5 stars VB8   February 7, 2010

I've been involved with Visual Basic versions 3 to 6 for the last 20 years until I retired from work! So why a need for VB 2008 (VB8). Well, it's like an itch; it needs scratching. More importantly, since retiring, a number of people have asked me to carry out some programming work for their companies. So I thought, why not. Why not indeed. Have you seen VB8. I found the concepts of the .NET environment daunting and at my age very difficult to grasp! So what I needed was a middle of the road book which assumed a reasonable understanding of Visual Basic and could hold my hand with .NET. I've just finished the 24 lessons (actually you are also 'given' exercises, small workshops and questions). So, if you answer everything then the book gives you a lot of info. for your money. I am now confident to return to VB programming using the new concepts learned. A small word of caution - this book will NOT teach you BASIC! but it will help you greatly to learn .NET concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Hypochondriac's Bible   December 17, 2009

I surmised, after using "Your Family A Medical Advisor", published by Family Circle and bought in Australia 25 years ago, that medicine had advanced as much as technology. That being the case, I researched a replacement and selected the BMA's "A-Z Family Medical Encyclopedia". What a gem! What an education! Written in very user-friendly format, my hypochondriac Mrs and I investigated every ailment and complaint she suspected she might have contracted over her lifetime and it was brilliant. Then, within a couple of weeks, I was admitted to hospital in the middle of the night and diagnosed with gall stones and a shedload of associated problems! Ten days later, having been discharged, I reviewed my diagnosis in our recent purchase and was amazed at how it described, in layman's terms, everything anyone could possibly want to know about the gall bladder, gall stones and every aspect of any necessary operation. Brilliant! Simply brilliant and every family should have copy.
